Computer-controlled, industrial-scale equipment at Genethon, a large molecular genetics laboratory near Paris, dedicated to mapping the human genome (the DNA of every chromosome) to locate the genes responsible for a number of inherited diseases & thus progress to finding methods of treatment. Physical maps of chromosomes are built from cloned stretches of DNA (derived from cultured white blood cell lines). The industrial-scale technology used at Genethon is reliant upon an artificial chromosome, the megaYAC, that stores long sections of DNA. For example, chromosome 21, the first to be mapped by this method, was spread over 250 megaYACs.
