Obesity DNA research. Two technicians carrying out the reactions for sequencing DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) during genetic research into obesity. Both are using automatic pipettes to add precise volumes of reaction components to a reaction vessel on ice. This work is being performed in the laboratories of Prof Froguel at the Pasteur Institute, Paris. This team have discovered that obesity is linked to a mutation in the gene that produces the appetite-regulating hormone leptin. Sequencing this gene, known as gene ob, will lead to a greater understanding of the nature of the disorder and to the development of gene therapies.
