Biotechnology: scientists working on a commercial fermentation plant used to culture genetically- engineered strains of yeasts, bacteria, fungi and mammalian cell lines for a variety of industrial applications. Examples of biotechnology products include soya bean curd from the fungus Mucor, industrial chemicals such as ethanol from the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Vitamin B12 from the Propionibacterium genus and the antiviral interferons from cultured mammalian cell lines.
