. Proteomics research. Researcher monitoring a laser-guided robotic spot cutter as it takes protein samples from a 2-D gel plate. The gel has been used to separate a mixture of heart proteins (dark spots in the gel at lower right) by their mass and charge. The spot cutter removes a spot of protein, which can then be analysed to determine its structure. Proteomics is the study of the structure and function of all the proteins in an organism. This knowledge will improve understanding of how organisms work, and may reveal new targets for drugs. Photographed at Proteome Science PLC's laboratory at King's College, London, UK. MODEL RELEASED
