Galenos
Illustration of Claudius Galenus (c.130-200AD), also known as Galen, one of the founders of medical diagnostic theory. Son of an architect, Galen was born at Pergamum in Greece (now Turkey). He was educated on his travels through the eastern Roman Empire, and was appointed physician at the Pergamum gladiatorial school in 159. In 164 he was made court physician to emperor Marcus Aurelius. Galen's best work was in anatomy, although most of his observations were based on domestic animals. His greatest achievements were in the identification of muscles and using the pulse as a diagnostic aid.
