adenovirus
Adenoviruses. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a group of adenoviruses. These viruses are the cause of an infection to the upper respiratory tract with symptoms that resemble a common cold. The virus is also associated with conjunctivitis eye infections and diarrhoea in children. Adenoviruses contain DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) genetic material surrounded by a protein coat. By appearance they have an icosahedral (20-faced) three- dimensional symmetry. The coat is composed of 252 capsomeres (subunits), here giving the surface a fuzzy appearance.
