Alzheimer's disease
Alzheimer's disease. Coloured magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of a coronal (vertical) section through a brain with Alzheimer's disease. In this condition there is widespread destruction of brain tissue leading to abnormally deep folding and shrinkage of the brain (orange). Two of the brain's fluid-filled ventricles (yellow, centre) have become enlarged. The disease leads to memory loss and disorientation, and is the most common cause of senile dementia. Alzheimer's disease has no known cause and there is no cure. MRI scanning uses a magnetic field and a radio wave pulse to produce 'slice' images of the body.
