Basal cell carcinoma. Close-up of a woman's forehead, showing a basal cell carcinoma (rodent ulcer) formed in the scar tissue of a previously- excised pigmented naevus or mole. Basal cell carcinoma is the most common type of skin cancer, most frequently occurring on the head and face. It is a slow-growing cancer usually related to long term, chronic exposure to the sun's ultraviolet radiation; agricultural and construction workers are most at risk. Due to their relatively benign nature, basal cell cancers may be successfully treated if diagnosed and removed before secondary complications - the destruction of underlying muscle & bone - occur.
