False-colour three-dimensional image revealing a cancerous tumour (purple) of the liver (blue), assembled from a series of conventional computed tomography (CT) scans. The liver is the site of both primary and secondary (metastases) cancers. Hepatoma (hepatocellular carcinoma) is the most common primary cancer & is associated with pre- existing cirrhosis & hepatitis B virus infection. Surgical resection (removal of various sections of the organ) offers the only means of a cure at present. Imagery of this type might be used to determine the position & size of the tumour, to indicate if any type of resection is appropriate. Blue structure is 'veine sus-hepatique'.
