Erythema multiforme. View of a child's arm covered in round, red weals with pale centres. This condi- tion is called erythema multiforme which literally means 'skin redness of many varieties'. It is an acute inflammation of the skin & sometimes of the internal mucous membranes. A red, itchy rash erupts on the limbs & sometimes on the rest of the body. Erythema multiforme may be accompanied by fever, sore throat, headache or diarrhoea. This disease can occur as a reaction to certain drugs or may accompany viral infections. However, many cases (as here) have no apparent cause. Treatment includes corticosteroid drugs (anti-inflammatory) & treatment of any illness or reaction.
