It is here behind the eardrum that a middle ear infection (otitis media) has occurred, with inflammation and pus discharge (yellow). Earache, fever & tinnitis (a ringing) may result. This is usually due to a bacterial infection spreading up the eustachian tube (lower centre) from infection in the upper respiratory tract. The nose is infected with pus, as are bone sinuses (sinusitis) above the nasal cavity. Treatment is with antibiotic drugs; the pus may need to be surgically drained.
