The donor kidney has been grafted to the patient's left iliac artery (lower right). Transplantation replaces a failed or failing kidney with a donor kidney. The donor kidney must be grafted on to a different blood supply since the diseased kidney is not removed. The kidneys filter waste from the blood and excrete it as urine.
