This is an allergic reaction, similar to urticaria, characterised by the swelling of soft tissue in the mouth, larynx and other areas. The most common cause is a sudden allergic reaction to certain foods, such as eggs, strawberries or seafood. Less common causes include drugs (such as penicillin), insect bites, infection, emotional stress and pollen. Angioedema can cause difficulty with speaking and breathing, potentially blocking the windpipe. Treatment is with anti-inflammatory drugs, and anti-histamines may help to reduce the symptoms.
