Flea bite marks on the skin of a 5-year-old girl. These marks (papules) occur due to a sensitivity (allergic) reaction to the bites, known as papular urticaria. Common sources of fleas include cats, dogs, birds, rabbits and hedgehogs. The human flea is now relatively uncommon due to improved sanitation. Symptoms from the bites may also include extreme itching (pruritis), breathing difficulties and dizziness. Fleas can cause illness through the spread of diseases such as plague or via secondary infection of the flea bite. Flea bites can be treated with a steroid cream and a topical antipruritic, although the source of the fleas needs to be investigated.
