Hashish or marijuana. Blocks of hashish (fore- ground) seen with leaves and flowering tops of the hemp plant, Cannabis sativa. They are used as an intoxicating drug. Hashish (or hash) is derived from the resin of this plant. Hashish is heated, then crumbled into tobacco in a hand-rolled cigarette. The leaves and flowering tops can be used like tobacco and smoked, or as a tea, or eaten in food. The active ingredient of the drug is tetrahydrocannabinol. When smoked (as a joint or reefer) the effects of the drug occur within a few minutes. The effects include relaxation, a slowing of time, and increased imagination. Large doses may result in confusion and depression.
