intravenous drip
Intravenous drip bag. Gloved hand holding an intravenous (IV) drip bag containing 0.9% sodium chloride (saline). A tube (at bottom left) carries saline into the bloodstream, usually through veins in the forearm. Saline is used to replace body fluids in dehydrated patients. An intravenous infusion, or drip, may also be used to give blood or plasma, to maintain body fluids in patients who are unable to drink or eat, and to administer certain drugs. The rate at which the saline enters the circulation is controlled by an adjustable valve. Rubber gloves help to maintain a sterile environment.
