Historical CT scan of the brain. One of the first Computed Tomography (CT or CAT) scans ever taken of the brain. It is seen in axial section, with the front of the head at top. Curled ear pinnae are at the sides; bone of the skull is white; the brain is coloured blue/brown. There is calcifi- cation at the centre of the brain. The scan was taken in early 1972 at Atkinson Morley Hospital in Wimbledon, London, where the earliest CT tests were conducted. Two successive 'slices', one in blue, one in red, were taken and superimposed to give depth to the image in these early scans. The scanner uses X-ray beams angled around the head. It was developed by Sir Godfrey Hounsfield at EMI.
