. Diagnosis for glaucoma. Ophthalmo- logist uses an ophthalmotonometer to diagnose glaucoma of the eye in a male patient. At left, the ophthalmologist looks into the eyepiece of a slit-lamp ophthalmoscope, while the patient's head is braced and held still. Mounted on the slit-lamp is a tonometer (device near the patient's eye). The tonometer directs a short, gentle blast of air against the surface of the eye allowing the ophthalmologist to view the effect. In this way, internal (intraocular) pressure of the eye can be measured to diagnose glaucoma. Glaucoma is a build up of pressure inside the eye causing blurring, and is a cause of blindness in the elderly. MODEL RELEASED
