Home dialysis catheter. View of the catheter used in Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis (CAPD), which can be carried out by the patient at home. The dialysis fluid enters the body cavity through the catheter, which passes through the abdominal wall. Waste fluid then passes out again, into a waste bag. The flow of these fluids is controlled by the patient using the blue clamps on the tubes (lower centre). Dialysis is a technique which removes waste products from the blood and excess fluid from the body as a treatment for kidney failure. In CAPD, the body's own filter, the peritoneum (abdominal lining), is the exchange interface.
