The dialysis fluid enters the body cavity through the catheter, which passes through the abdominal wall. Waste fluid then passes out again, into a waste bag. The flow of these fluids is controlled by the patient using the blue clamps on the tubes (lower centre). Dialysis is a technique which removes waste products from the blood and excess fluid from the body as a treatment for kidney failure. In CAPD, the body's own filter, the peritoneum (abdominal lining), is the exchange interface.
