Three different blood products derived from a single unit of donated blood. The unit at left contains a concentrated solution of red blood cells prepared by removing part of the liquid plasma. Concentrated red cells are used to treat patients affected by chronic anaemia. The unit at centre contains a concentrated solution of platelets which play an important role in normal blood clotting. The unit at right contains fresh plasma which must be kept at a temperature below - 18 Celsius. Plasma is rich in clotting factors and is used to treat many types of bleeding disorders.
