Mosquito net. A boy sleeping under mosquito net. The net is impregnated with insecticide for use as a protective measure against mosquito bites. Physical barriers are becoming increasingly important in preventing malaria as the malarial parasite becomes resistant to traditional anti- malarial drugs (chloroquinine). Malaria is caused by a parasitic protozoan carried in the saliva of Anopheles mosquitoes. Symptoms include severe fever, and in some cases liver, kidney, blood and brain complications which can be fatal. Other measures against mosquitoes include protective clothing, insecticides, and even releasing sterile male mosquitoes. Photographed in Tanzania.
