Emergency contraceptive levonorgestrel
Morning-after pill. This is Levonelle, the brand name of an emergency contraceptive pill that is available as an over-the-counter drug. This version of Levonelle, which uses 2 pills, has been discontinued since November 2005. It has been replaced by a double-strength, single-pill version. The first pill was taken a maximum of three days after unprotected sex, and the second pill 12 hours after that. The pills contain a high dose of the synthetic hormone levonorgestrel, which disrupts various stages of ovulation, fertilisation and pregnancy. Levonelle is manufactured by Schering Healthcare.
