Viral cultures in Hepatitis C research. Tray of petri dishes containing virally infected cells used in hepatitis C research. Each dish is filled with a nutrient medium (blue) upon which colonies of infected cells are growing (white). By 1994 the hepatitis C virus has not been isolated and cultured in the laboratory. Here, scientists at the Institut Pasteur in Paris have developed a chimaera virus made from parts of yellow fever virus and hepatitis C virus. By infecting culture cells with this chimaera virus, and letting it replicate, the researchers hope to understand the hepatitis C virus, & develop a vaccine against it.
