. Bacterial culture. Technician's gloved hand holds a petri dish containing a streaked bacterial culture growing on an agar gel. Bacterial samples are smeared across the gel with a sterile hoop to draw out individual bacterial cells. These cells feed on the nutrients in the agar gel and multiply to form pure colonies (individual dots). Bacteria from these colonies can then be removed and analysed.
