False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the internal wall of the uterus, the endometrium, during the secretory phase. The endometrium consists of a ciliated epithelium, green at centre right, supported by a connective tissue stroma (purple) which contains many tubular glands. These glands have produced the granules of mucus (yellow-mustard), composed of proteins and sugars, which represent the nutritive elements for a possible fertilised ovum. The secretory phase is triggered during the ovarian cycle by the hormones oestrogen and progesterone which are secreted by the ovary. Magnification: x1350 at 6x7cm size.
