At centre is the uterus, a pear-shaped, hollow muscular organ or 'womb' in which the embryo implants and grows. Two fallopian tubes, funnel-shaped with finger-like projections (at left and right) receive the released egg and pass it to the uterus. The pair of ovaries (orange) release eggs at monthly intervals.
