X-rays of a frog, 1890s
X-rays of a frog. X-ray photogravures of a frog from the front and back, produced by Austrian chemist Josef Maria Eder (1855-1944) and Austrian photochemist Eduard Valenta (1857-1937). They published their collection of X-rays in January 1896, less than a month after the discovery of X-rays had been announced. The collection of X-ray photogravures included X-ray images of human hands and feet, fish, frogs, a snake, a chameleon, a lizard, a rat, a newborn rabbit, carved cameos and this assortment of natural materials. The portfolio was titled 'Versuche uber Photographie mittelst der Rontgen'schen Strahlen' (Experiments on photography by means of the Roentgen rays).
