This impact crater is in the Vastitas Borealis, a far northern plain. The ice forms a thin crust of frost on the sand dunes of the crater floor. In the polar regions of Mars, water ice can exist all year. There is no liquid water on Mars, however, the atmospheric pressure being too low to support it. This crater is around 35 kilometres in diameter. The image was taken by the High Resolution Stereo Camera on the Mars Express spacecraft on 2nd February 2005. Editorial Stock Photo - Afloimages
