False-colour ultraviolet image of an eruptive prominence on the Sun, photographed from the Skylab space station on August 21, 1973. Taken in the light of helium, at a wavelength of 30.4 nanometres, the picture also shows the Sun's chromosphere. The faintest regions in the image are coloured red, & brighter regions yellow, blue, lilac & white. The white area is an active region associated with a sunspot group. The magnetic fields have flung the prominence out into space as the multi-stranded jet of matter extending half a million kilometres. North is to the right. The photo was taken with Skylab's ATM (Apollo Telesc- ope Mount) extreme ultraviolet spectroheliograph.
