Libra, the Scales or Balance, seventh of the twelve constellations or signs of the Zodiac. The figure of the scales is superimposed on a photograph in which the constellation stars have been enhanced. Libra was apparently a creation of Roman times; before that it was joined with Scorpius in a double constellation called Scorpius cum chelae, the Scorpion with Claws. The identification of the constellation with the scales or balance may refer to Roman law; but Libra was also known as the balance beam in Indic & Middle Eastern cultures before Roman times. The Sun is in Libra from 23 September to 23 October.
