The location is the mountainous Taurus-Littrow region of the moon, southeast of the Serenitatis Basin. Apollo 17 was launched on 7 Dec, 1972. At the right of the picture, behind the flag, is the Lunar Roving Vehicle. At the left of the picture, behind Schmitt, is the Lunar Module 'Challenger'.
