Illustration of the Artemis communications satellite receiving data from an Earth observation satellite and relaying it to Europe. Artemis receives the data over a laser link (red) and relays it by microwave transmission. The Semiconductor Laser Intersatellite Link Experiment (SILEX) on Artemis uses a near- infrared laser to exchange data between satellites in orbit. Each terminal consists of a 25-cm telescope with a silicon avalanche photodiode for reception. Artemis is due for launch in 1997.
