The nerve cells brown are immobilised between polyimide pillars bright rings. The cells are cultured on the circuit until they form a network. Under each cell is a transistor, which can excite the neuron above it. The neuron then passes a signal to the neurons attached to it, which in turn activates the transistors beneath them.
