^BEDITORIAL USE ONLY. Cybernetic circuit. Light micrograph of a circuit in which nerve cells communicate with silicon chips. The nerve cells (brown) are immobilised between polyimide pillars (bright rings). The cells are cultured on the circuit until they form a network. Under each cell is a transistor, which can excite the neuron above it. The neuron then passes a signal to the neurons attached to it, which in turn activates the transistors beneath them. This experiment shows that hybrid neuron-silicon circuits are feasible. Work done at the Max Planck Institute in Germany. Magnification: x50 at 5x7cm size.
