Microjaw cell analyser. Optical image of a micromachine using minute moving jaws (lower left, serrated) to trap a single human cell (dark grey). The jaws' silicon teeth have captured the cell from a stream of red blood cells (pale grey spheres) being pumped through a microchannel two hundredths of a millimetre wide. When the jaws reopen, the captured cell will be released unharmed. In the future this compact device may be used to rapidly deliver therapeutic molecules, such as proteins or drugs, to individual cells. It was designed by researchers at Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA.
