Micromechanical gears. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of tiny gears that increase the torque of a micromechanical motor. These gears have been created on the surface of a silicon chip. By using gearing such as this, even a minuscule motor can be made to move everyday-sized objects. By placing the gearing and motor on the same chip as the integrated circuit that controls it, machines can be made that are practically invisible to the naked eye. These could include locks and switches. Magnification unknown.
