Wearable computing. Researcher Thad Starner wear- ing MicroOptical spectacles linked to a portable computer. Computer data is projected onto the spec tacles' glass. The wearer sees an image equivalent to a 38-centimetre screen floating in mid-air a metre away, letting him read information whilst watching his surroundings. The data can be altered by using a hand-held keyboard or a microphone. The computer can use a small, head-mounted camera to recognise people he meets & then automatically provide data on them. The internet may also be accessed using radio links. Starner is a co- founder of the 'wearable computer' project at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA.
