A contemporary poster advertising the first passenger locomotive in 1808. This particular locomotive, called 'Catch-me-who-can', was used to give joyrides in Euston Square, London. Trevithick designed the first high-pressure steam engines initially for colliery work, but these were found to be just what the locomotive designers had been looking for. Trevithick's engines gave about three times the power per unit cylinder volume over Watt's engines, and made passenger locomotives a viable prospect.
