Cryptosporidium. Coloured Scanning electron micrograph (SEM) showing a stage in the life-cycle of the parasitic sporozoan (protozoan) Cryptosporidium parvum. Rounded oocysts are seen, which contain the infective sporozoite stage. This parasite causes severe diarrhoea in humans, a condition otherwise known as cryptosporidiosis. It can be spread from person to person or from domestic animals to people. The main symptom is an attack of watery diarrhoea lasting about a week; fever, nausea and abdominal pain may occur. The infection is more severe in immune suppressed patients, and is common in patients suffering from AIDS. Magnification: x1360 at 6x4.5cm size.
