canine tapeworm infection
Light micrograph of the larval form of the dog tapeworm Echinococcus granulosus, taken from a hydatid cyst in a sheep's lung. The larval form, which also infects humans, causes the disease known as hydatidosis. Large cysts, cont- aining numerous larvae, form in the liver, lung or brain impairing their functioning & damaging surrounding tissue. Their presence in the brain may cause blindness & epilepsy. When infected tissue is consumed the cyst walls are digested, releasing the larvae into the small intestines. The crown of hooks or 'rostellum' secure it to the wall of the intestines & feeding commences. The worm reaches adulthood here. Mag: X80 (35mm).
