Compost is obtained by stacking plant material together in a heap. The material degrades resulting in a brown crumbly compost which when dug in to soil provides nutrients for growing plants. Eisenia foetida (centre, pink) is a herm- aphrodite worm composed of segments (transverse lines). It has an important role in the decomposition of material in a compost heap. It feeds on decaying plants and bacteria loosening and aerating the compost as it does so. Magnification: x17 at 6x6 cm size.
