Madagascan giant hissing cockroach (Gromphadorhina portentosa) on a human hand. These insects are popular as pets and school exhibits. They measure up to 9 centimetres in length and are wingless. They make a loud hissing noise by expelling air from holes (spiracles) in the abdomen. Males hiss when fighting with other males, to attract females and when alarmed. Females hiss only when alarmed. G. portentosa is native to the rainforest floors of Madagascar. They live on decomposing fruit and vegetable matter.
