Dragonfly. High-speed photograph of a dragonfly (Libellula depressa) in flight. This insect has large compound eyes and a mobile head, which provides it with a wide field of vision for use when hunting. It spends long periods on a perch, from which it darts out to investigate passing flies. For this reason it is also known as a darter. Members of the Libellula group of dragonflies possess flattened abdomens which make them appear less slender than other dragonflies. The usual colour is bronze or red, but males often develop a blue hue as they age.
