Macrophotograph of woodworm tunnels in a roof timber. The tunnels are made by the woodworm beetle, Anobium punctatum. Both the adults and their larvae attack wood, but it is the larvae which cause the most damage. Eggs are laid on the surface of dead wood, including beams & rafters, timber, furniture and dead trees, and the larvae hatch out and begin to eat their way inwards. The damage can be extensive without being noticeable; a few holes on the surface reveal little of the network of tunnels inside.
