Fruit fly. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster on a leaf. The body of the fly (coloured orange) can be seen in profile with the abdomen at right and head at left. Under the head the proboscis can be seen touching the leaf surface with the sensory palps at either side. The multi-faceted compound eyes are red and the wings are silver. Drosophila melanogaster is widely used in genetic experiments because it reproduce very quickly and is easily manipulated in the laboratory. Magnification: x18 at 6x6cm size.
