False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a female specimen of the mosquito species Anopheles gambiae. The females of this species are carriers of the malaria parasite, Plasmodium sp.. The SEM shows the mosquito's belly swollen after a meal of human blood. The female is distinguished from the male of the species by the relative sparseness of the bristles on her antennae.
