Haired mandibular palps of the mouth-parts are visible (centre); with the lower palp can be seen the tube-like proboscis with which the mosquito sucks blood. The female is distinguished from the male by having no bristles on her antennae (at top); a large compound eye (black) is seen on the head. Only females of Anopheles maculipennis carry the malaria parasite. Flight muscles can be seen inside the mosquito thorax (at right).
