anopheles mosquito (any mosquito of genus Anopheles, capable of carrying malaria)
Malaria mosquito. Macrophotograph of an Anopheles gambiae mosquito on a leaf. Female Anopheles mosquitoes transmit malaria whilst taking blood meals from humans. The parasite responsible for malaria (Plasmodium) is carried in the female mosquito's saliva. Female mosquitoes have a long proboscis (at lower centre) adapted for piercing human skin to suck blood. They have compound eyes (blue/yellow) which have many facets. Malaria is a major health problem and a killer disease in Africa, Asia and South America. Magnification: x4 at 35mm size.
