Fourth of 5 false-colour scanning electron micro- graphs of caterpillars hatching from the eggs of the large white butterfly, Pieris brassicae. The micrograph shows a newly emerged caterpillar amongst eggs on the undersurface of a nasturtium leaf. The eggs are laid in large groups on the leaves of crops such as cabbage & broccoli. The caterpillars (larvae) hatch in September; they winter as pupae & emerge as butterflies in May. The young larvae feed on the cuticle of the leaf until after the first moult, when the diet expands to the whole leaf. Their voracious appetite can defoliate a crop.
