Moth camouflage. A hawkmoth Hyloicus pinastri, resting on the bark of a pine tree. This insect mimics pine bark, in its body markings and brown body colouration. Markings of white and black break up the moth's body outline, while also resembling cracks in the bark. The behaviour of this moth is to remain still. By blending in with its environment, the hawkmoth gains protection against predators. Hyloicus pinastri is a common moth in Europe.
