An Algerian scorpion, Scorpio Mauraus. Scorpions are carnivorous, their prey consisting of beetles, cockroaches and other arthropods. Prey is grasped with the pincers, close to the body, and is often passed directly to the chelicerae (the small, paired first appendages) which carry the food to the oral cavity. The poison spine in the 'tail' is usually brought into use only when the prey is large or struggles violently. Scorpions have several eyes; a large pair of median eyes on the dorsal shield and two to five pairs of smaller, lateral eyes on the edge of the shield, near the mouth. This specimen has a body 35mm in length.
